Temple History & Legends
Located on the banks of the Palar River at Pallikonda (“The Reclining Lord”), this shrine’s main idol is carved from Salagrama stone. According to the Brahmmanda Purana, an overnight stay here grants moksha. During invasions, the original was hidden and replaced with Kasthuri (Chotta) Ranganathar—still worshipped today.
Indra’s Brahmahati dosha was cured by a year-long penance in the Vyasa Pushkarni here. Legends say Sri Mahalakshmi and Saraswati’s rivalry led to the formation of the Palar River, stopped by Lord Vishnu’s reclining form at three sites—Pallikonda being the first.
Prarthana Sthalam
Devotees perform archana and abhishekam here for auspicious marriages, reunions, and relief from financial woes.
