Ananthazhwan is the name for Adisesha on whom the Lord rests. Adisesha is the nagaraja, King of the serpents. Adisesha is said to hold all the planets of the universe on his hoods and also constantly sings the glories of the God Vishnu from all his mouths. He is sometimes referred to as Ananta Sesha, which translates as endless-Sesha or Adisesha "first Shesha". It is said that when Adisesha uncoils, time moves forward and creation takes place; when he coils back, the universe ceases to exist.

Ananthazhwan floats coiled on the ocean of bliss, to form the bed for Lord Vishnu. In the Bhagavad-Gita of Chapter 10, verse 29, Lord Krishna, while describing 75 of his common manifestations, declares, "anantaś ca asmi nāgānāṁ:”, meaning, “Of the nagas, I am Ananta.”

He is always with the Lord! Even when the Lord descends to this world, Adisesha accompanies Him in some form and do services to his Lord. He is in eternal service and hence, is the personification of service.

Poigai Azhwar sings in his Mudhal Thiruvandhadhi about Adisesha as:

senRAL kudaiyAm irundhAl singAsanamAm

ninRAl maravadiyAm nILkadluL enRum

puNaiyAm maNi viLakkAm pUmpattAm pulgum

aNaiyAm thirumARku aravu

Meaning, Ananthazhwan is an umbrella when the Lord walks; he is a seat when He sits; he is the footwear/sandals when He stands up; he is the float when He is in the milky ocean; he is a lamp; he is a cloth and he is a pillow!! Thus he is everything when it comes to rendering service.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Have I rendered any kind of service to the Lord, like Adisesha?"
