Rama was born to Kaushalya and King Dasharatha while Lakshmana and his brother Shatrughna were born to Sumitra and King Dasharatha. Lakshmana is personified by Rama as a man with unwavering loyalty, love and commitment to his elder brother through times of joy and adversity alike. Lakshmana is specially attached to Rama.

When sage Vishwamitra took Prince Rama with him for killing the demons, Lakshmana accompanied his brother. When Rama was asked to go to the forest based on the boons that Kaikeyi got from King Dasaratha, Lakshmana too wanted to go with Him. Initially, Rama did not agree to that.

Lakshmana pleaded with Lord Rama stating: "Just as a fish would not survive out of the water, so too mother Sita and myself cannot survive separation from You. Therefore, You have to take me with You." He then told Lord Rama that when He and Sita live and play in the sides of mountains, he would perform all kinds of services to them "aham sarvam karishyAmi".

Lakshmana's mother Sumitra tells him that he was made for the sake of living in the forest "srushTstavam vanavAsAya". She also warned him that he should not lose his mind watching the beauty of Rama's walk and fail in his duties.

During their exile, Lakshmana served Rama and Sita reverently. In Panchvati, Lakshmana also built a hut for Lord Rama and Sita to live in. There, never, was a situation where Lakshmana opposed Rama, except when, after the war, when Rama asked Sita to give test of her purity, Lakshmana for the first time got angry on Rama and opposed him.

After the war in Lanka, Rama was crowned king of Ayodhya and Bharata became the crown prince. Rama had offered to make Lakshmana the crown prince but he refused, saying Bharata is greater than he, and more deserving of the title. He added that he love to be on service for Rama than bearing the crown prince title.

Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Did I stay always with Him and perform all kinds of services like Lakshmana?"
